It’s like stepping into wonderland … everyone is smiling, eager to help you, free tasty samples. They have everything, seafood, cheese, huge wine selection, fresh breads, deli, desserts, hand cranked ice cream (joking). It’s a great feeling of relief to have them finally open in our neighborhood.
Posted in Shops, Contractors, Opinion, News, Events, DevelopmentProbably the least exciting of all new businesses at City Vista but work has begun on a Chevy Chase Bank at (I believe) 1059 5th Street.
Its the closest business to Safeway on 5th and one up from 5th St. Hardware.
Posted in ShopsJust joined the new Results Gym. They are offering tours of the site and are selling charter memberships at a discounted rate. Should be nice- if anyone is interested the info from the email is below.
The new Results Gym at 5th & K St., NW in the City Vista development is set to open in September. We are having a pre-opening sale with charter memberships available for those who commit before the club opens.
Right now we are under the first 300 members and have 3 different options. They are all month to month and are guaranteed through January 2010.
City Vista only: $0 enrollment/ $70 per month
City Vista/Dupont/Farragut North: $0 enrollment/ $75 per month
City Vista/Dupont/Farragut North/Capitol Hill: $0 enrollment/ $80 per month
These rates will incrementally increase once we reach 300 members so the sooner folks commit, the better. The retail price of membership once the gym opens will be $299 enrollment and $87 or $97/month.
You have the option of starting now and using our other locations until City Vista opens or freezing your membership until the new club is open.
You can get started over the phone or at our Sales Office at 445 K St., NW. The phone number is 202.234.5678 x4.
According to a recent WaPo article, the city is exploring the idea of closing the northern section of 395 to eliminate access to/from NY Ave & 3rd Street. This stunted highway has been the subject of debate since way back in the day when they wanted to level Shaw to take it all the way up to MD. I’m really glad they didnt do that. (check out an excellent exhibit at the National Building Museum for the skinny on that & Urban Renewal…hey! you can walk there!) And more recently when the tunnel under NY Ave idea was percolating. What do you all think the closure of that top stretch of 395 would do for traffic, etc? Certainly the intersection of 3rd & NY and its environs is …er…a challenge for pedestrians. With many new people moving into the Triangle, & businesses opening up shop drawing walkers from all over, maybe this could be a good thing. With Northwest One development under way, it could be linked to the Triangle with smarth growth practices. But then take into account where the cars are going to go…Mass Ave probably. Is that better? And how would this fit into the other 10 plans they have for the area? Consider what we have now & sound off:
Speaking of pedestrians, Charles Allen from Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells Office (who blogs:) sent notice of a public meeting for the pedestrian master plan. you can view the actual plan here.
Posted in Real Estate, Meetings, Shops, News, Events, history, Transportation, DevelopmentHi everyone - I stoped by the sales center at the Results Gym @ CityVista yesterday afternoon. Residents of CityVista pay $65/mo (no enrollment fee). My friend who is a current member at their other locations said that was a great rate. I got a tour of the gym floor (still under construction) and it looks nice! If you refer someone and they join too, you get $50. Too bad they don’t have an indoor pool :(
Posted in Shops, NewsLast night I was pleased to attend the Blagden Alley Association’s Marriott briefing at the Convention Center. Marriott’s reps gave a nice presentation on a giant screen of the brand new convention center mega marriott due to break ground 1st Q 2009 & shall be completed in 2012. its still in concept but its nice n glassy with a big atrium in the middle. The historic pipe fitters union building will be incorporated. the site will be connnected to the convention center for underground truck loading & pedestrian traffic. retail will be various eateries with ample sidewalk cafes on each corner, activating the streetscape. big setback on Mass ave for valet dropoff, cafes, etc…they will be developing traffic plan, hiring 51% dc residents, job training thru the WCCA. as far as the site on the north side of the 900 block of L, they plan 2 smaller hotels to be completed about the same time in 2012, but the planning for that will be forthcoming. plans shall be online soon and we shall post when they appear.
(imho) Dear Marriott: please do not make the same mistake that DC government has in building a big fancy facility that has a lovely view of vacant boarded up rotting buildings. you own them so it should be easier for you. thanks a bunch!
Hey everyone!
The comment period for the 5th & I Parcel will close May 16th so if anyone would still like to weigh in, please do so before 3pm tomorrow (Friday).
The proposal presentations can be viewed here:

Several neighborhood blogs have posted regarding this parcel. Comments may be left directly on those blogs or on this post. Though the DMPED office has these links, MVSNA will compile and send them directly to DC Gov. Here are the Blog links:

ANC 6C wishes to hold a special meeting on May 28th. We will post the location if it is scheduled.
The Mayors office will be narrowing the field to 2 proposals then making a final decision around June 1. Hopefully soon after that we will see some dirt fly!
Just heard on the radio - Mayor Fenty has announced that the north parcel of the Old Convention Center Site that sits between NY Ave, 9th, 11th & (I) will be leased the Hines Archstone Smith for development into a 400 room 4 star hotel with 100k sq ft of retail. Washington post has the details. Hines is also the developer of the larger south parcel of the OCC site so they are developing it all (it was planned this way). This pretty much kills the fancy new library idea that former Mayor Williams was so into. The south part will be housing, office and more retail. First dirt should fly in January! Until then, tennis.
Speaking of Hines, they do support the community.
For the ladies! I just visited that little boutique down 7th St, Ida’s Idea, for the first time ever despite walking past it many times. Ive got to tell you all this place is delightful and totally worth checking out! I took my mom there and she tried on all kinds of fabulous clothes from the US, France & Italy. They have a very interesting selection of colorful, airy & flowy couture pieces. I say pieces as they do because each one is pretty much a work of art. Its a family business, warm and inviting. Though its a little pricey, go. You’ll have a great experience and you might end up with something very special to wear. Even if you arent exactly a skinny minnie, they are a good fit as they do have big girl sizes. My momma went with a full length grey strapless dress with a subtle diagonally striped A-line skirt and she looked HOT!
Ida’s Idea
7th Street between Mass Ave & I Street (east side - old ATF Building) Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Happy Mother’s Day!
The short list of presentations has been pretty well covered by bloggers at PQLiving & MVTriangle so I wont get majorly into the details. Excellent job btw! read those posts for the full scoop. Also check out the info posted on the DC Gov website. We’ve got a choice of 4 developers:
JBG - traditional configuration hotel/retail/residential to be combined with substantial adjoining parcels, not so many details & specifics. Conceptual design includes a hexagonal tower on the corner with a big wall behind it.
The Arts at 5th and I, Donahoe/Holland - frou frou ME Hotel/residential, spa, Boisdale restaurant/jazzclub, Cappucinos (breakfast…). One of the presenters got very excited when talking about the plans (ME! hotel!). He started describing Boisedale, its steak tar-tar, its steak quality, its steak aging durations, and the dripping meat blood. really, i swear! oh the design is like a big glass box with random elements - i think they are balconies. maybe some of them. take a look. this one may acquire parcels to the north. They have a website linked above & it plays jazz music.
I5, PIP - boutique hotel/spa/residential, the design has 2 towers in a U shape with an elevated outdoor space. The design is fairly traditional with the roof stepped back in 3 sections. commitments from the owner of Tryst & the Diner, Avalon Hotel, China Tresure (flowers). They also plan to incorporate chinatown cultural elements, artist space, & exhibit space. i do not believe they are seeking to obtain adjoining parcels. Click the link for the PDF…
Buccini/Pollin - 2 hotels atop a World Cafe Live, a small live music venue/ restaurant that will have a musical community outreach element. Hard to tell but the conceptual design seems to contain glowing boxes that may stick out on the upper levels.
All of the proposals have excellent local involvement, green elements, adequate parking arrangements…There was much talk about iconic architecture.
There is a public comment period and I believe it should be directed to ANC 6C. They also have a Yahoo Group. we will make sure DC gov & the ANC are reading the blogs too so as many people as possible get their voices heard. also MVTriangle has a nifty poll. Consider attending upcoming public ANC 6C Meetings where this will be discussed:
Wednesday May 7th, 7:00pm, NPR, 635 Mass Ave NW (ANC 6C Planning & Zoning Meeting)
Wednesday May 14th, 7:00pm, Heritage Foundation, 214 Mass Ave NE (ANC 6C full commission)
DC will be making their decision around June 1st. Then we will be on our way to having more vacant property developed!
