I passed by Avenue last week, the nightclub at 649 New York Avenue NW and noticed the windows said “Lux Lounge” and the Avenue sign had been removed from above the door.  It looks like they’ve made some changes inside.  Does anyone know about the new [A]venue?  Apparently, its website is coming soon.

Here is an announcement from Shaw Main Streets (from Renewshaw):Shaw Main Streets will present its fifth annual Community Forum on Development Projects on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the Executive Orders area at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW. Developers with major projects planned or underway in central Shaw will present their plans or update the community on the status of their endeavors with illustrated PowerPoint presentations. This is also an opportunity to ask developers questions about their activities in the neighborhood and how their projects will benefit the community. Developers invited include Marriott Hotels (Marriott Marquis Convention Center), Douglas Development (600 block of New York Avenue, NW and Wonder Bread Factory), Banneker Ventures (700 block of Florida Avenue, NW), Roadside Development (City Market at O), Broadcast Center Partners (Broadcast Center One), Howard Theatre Restoration (Howard Theatre), and Hines Interests (City Center). SMS will also announce the latest results of the annual survey of new business development preferences for the neighborhood. This event is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. For more information, call SMS at 202-265-SHAW or visit www.shawmainstreets.com.It would be great if people could attend this because a lot of this development will shape the neighborhood going forward due to its proximity or outright inclusion in the case of Douglas… (I won’t be able to, unfortunately)

In addition to the awesome MVTriangle blog’s excellent coverage, here are a couple crappy photos from the event.  For those of you who dont remember, “The Arts” (plays sound) is the snazzy proposal involving the Melia Hotel, Boisedale restaurant/jazz club, a cafe, bike store, etc.  Developers include Donahoe, Holland, & Shalom Baranes (architect).  And they had a blog.  This team was the one the community & ANC were most in favor of.  If I’m not mistaken this developer is contracted for the property up to K Street which includes the Rogue & Fun Fair!!!  Council approval of the deal will be required once its all worked out, expect shovel to hit dirt in about 18 months.  So they say at least 3 yrs to completion.  I dont know about you all but I’m bouncing with joy!  Thanks to DNA, ANC 6C and everyone who kept this moving and made sure the neighbors were informed & had excellent input!

HP approved the razing of 1209 4th Street NW.  Sad news for this long neglected 150 yr old junker but shes beyond saving.  Demolition by neglect at its finest… I just glad there is a new owner.

Responding to blog and e-mail listserv:
The credit goes to a number of residents who had to work hard over the years, showing up at all kinds of meetings, to quash the stadium, the parking/tour bus hub, support the earlier versions of City Vista, all in Mount Vernon Triangle area.
We really need more time to cross New York Avenue.  I had to cross with a bad ankle today and it was close.  I can only imagine what it will be like for older residents with carts during rush hour. Can we get this fast-tracked??

As Darren says in his e-mail, we could use a lot more focused, practical, and visible support from Jack’s and neighboring councilmembers’ offices to help Cary and Si and others who have been working hard on vacant properties in our neighborhoods and the crime it attracts.

What can we do to get an arts/crafts supply store/gallery/class space, a bike store/rental/repair shop, a hair salon/day spa into some of the empty storefronts/new developments in MVT? The rent may be too high…I would say bookstore, but maybe Busboys and Poets will fill a little of that need.  I think some niche bookstores might work, say for foodies and children…could this be on the agenda of our next MVSNA meeting on the 16th?  Perhaps an update on restaurant/retail development around MVS and MVT from City Vista and the BID and then a discussion on what we would still like to see here and how to get it here…

See today’s Post section, Style & Arts, check out pp. M16-17, entries for Juliuanne Brienza (Fringe Festival) and Anne Corbett (Cultural Development Corporation).
Cary: When you recuperate from the hangover, altho’ you looked great walking your dog yesterday, I’ll buy you some champagne…

Roc Central has got it a$$ backwards.  and this sign has been up for a while.  and I did not touch this photo :)

What do you all think of this method of projection advertising?  I’m intrigued, its mobile, totally temporary & non invasive.  If it wasn’t on one of Douglas Develpment’s vacant dumps I think I’d be into it.  Amusingly enough this Toyota ad was being projected from a Nissan vehicle right next to another traditional billboard car ad for a Lexus i think.

Some selected images from a larger set of shots of Mount Vernon Triangle & PQ/Chinatown taken mostly from atop 400 Mass.  Enjoy!
