Hi all:

I live on 6th St between L and M and I park my car in an alley that is accessible from 5th street. Recently, my neighbors have been the victims of property crime. One had his car window broken into and his stereo equipment stolen and in a separate incident another neighbor had his bike stolen. Both incidents were reported to the police. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for almost three years and I wasn’t particularly concerned about property crime — unless say I left valuables in my car or my bike unlocked. I was just curious if there has been a rash of crime, or if it was just our turn. Thanks.

I usually sleep through the fireworks and the gun shots and the shattering glass, but last night at about 2:15 a.m., I awoke to the sound of what I think might have been a gun shot.  Did anyone else hear it or know what happened?  Thanks.

A few weeks ago my roommate mentioned she saw someone posted on here they work for Bread in the City and are willing to take donations in.  I am moving overseas in a few months and have begun my purge and I have about 10 race t-shirts, most brand new, I would like to donate.  I know its not much, but I would prefer giving to a charity than just a thrift shop.  I have donated to Bread in the City before but I don’t think the one in NW is accepting regular donations anymore, and I am often not home during the donation times.  I also do not own a car.  Would the person who works there mind identifying themselves again and let me know how I can donate.  Or if anyone else has good ideas let me know.

Here is an announcement from Shaw Main Streets (from Renewshaw):Shaw Main Streets will present its fifth annual Community Forum on Development Projects on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the Executive Orders area at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW. Developers with major projects planned or underway in central Shaw will present their plans or update the community on the status of their endeavors with illustrated PowerPoint presentations. This is also an opportunity to ask developers questions about their activities in the neighborhood and how their projects will benefit the community. Developers invited include Marriott Hotels (Marriott Marquis Convention Center), Douglas Development (600 block of New York Avenue, NW and Wonder Bread Factory), Banneker Ventures (700 block of Florida Avenue, NW), Roadside Development (City Market at O), Broadcast Center Partners (Broadcast Center One), Howard Theatre Restoration (Howard Theatre), and Hines Interests (City Center). SMS will also announce the latest results of the annual survey of new business development preferences for the neighborhood. This event is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. For more information, call SMS at 202-265-SHAW or visit www.shawmainstreets.com.It would be great if people could attend this because a lot of this development will shape the neighborhood going forward due to its proximity or outright inclusion in the case of Douglas… (I won’t be able to, unfortunately)

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any place in the neighborhood where one can donate clothes? When I lived on Capitol Hill there was a donation drop box at the local supermarket but have not found anything similar in Mt. Vernon Square.
Thank!
MEB

Hi all:
First, let me say that I’m happy to live in an urban environment with a diverse group of ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds.  Having said that, what the heck is going on on 4th between K and Mass?  I have passed by in my car a few times this past week and have seen quite a few characters.  It looks like a hub of crack-induced prostitution activity.  I’m not talking about one or two individuals but rather 8 to 10 folks hanging out by a fence near a vacant lot.  Is there anything can that local residents or their representatives can do?  I don’t mean to suggest just moving them somewhere else or carting them off to jail — there’s just gotta be a better way!  Thanks for letting me rant.

okay so I finally saw neighborhood folk walking on this thing the other day. Where the heck do I get in and does anyone know the hours it is open to the public?

Does any one have any idea who or what organization is providing the tree box fences on NJ Ave?  I believe they are also being installed on Third St.

Hi,
I’m moving to the neighborhood to N street in the mid 400s.  I’ve been driving and walking around during the day and nights to check out the area.  Looks pretty safe from what I can tell.  However, I’m a recent transplant from Boston still learning about the city.  Any words of wisdom as in what areas to stay away from?
Thanks,
Chris

so the other night, i see an older gentleman and a tranny prostitute walk by my house and into Brown’s alley. since one of the windows from the house actually looks into the alley, i decided to see where they would go since the alley actually gets decent traffic at night….and basically, they walked about halfway down the alley and then proceed to climb into what I assume is an abandoned building.
and they did this with cars passing by them!
….so my question is, should i actually call 311 or 911 and report this? Will a police officer actually come out to “investigate”? Does anyone else have experience with reporting prositution-related activities??
