Is UHOP ever going to be a good neighbor and give us advance notice of their events. I have mentioned a possible need for weekend zoned parking in the past and after this weekend I’m bringing up the subject again.
Posted in Opinion, Events, Transportation, DevelopmentQuite an article from Loose Lips shedding some light on At-Large Council candidate/wardialer Michael Brown. The reason I post this is because it tells the story of a legal dispute between Brown & our very own Millers Copy Service at 7th & M over a venture at the convention center. A legal dispute which Brown lost badly, and as the article reminds us, not his only legal problem. Apparently he still hasnt settled that 635k or so he owes the MCI Center for luxury boxes. Between this saga which includes a healthy dose of favoritism & just stinks, the littering, the infuriating robocalls, the lazy campaigning, and the fibbing, I am really leaning towards casting one of my votes for Mara (eeek! a republican!). I was never hot on Michael Brown ever since his lame attempt to become mayor, but the more I hear, the more i get majorly turned off.
Who are you all voting for and why?
ANC=Advisory Neighborhood Commission, the front line of our government. DC may be firmly in Obama’s column (woo hoo!) with its 3 little electoral votes, and lack federal representation..but our vote DOES count. Local politics have such a direct effect on our neighborhood lives, and no politics is more local than the ANC. Now I know ANC 6C candidates have no opponents & that commission functions very well, thats fabulous. And I know ANC 2C has been discussed to death and beyond and back but this is where the drama is! The last election between Leroy Thorpe and ANC 2C02 Commissioner Kevin Chapple had a 5 vote spread. Thats it. The other contests in 2C didnt have much more, these are close elections and your vote matters!
We have a chance to change this commission for the better so that it is run by the people we elect, and it represents the entire community. We have 2 excellent incumbent Commissioners Kevin Chapple & Alex Padro who deserve re-election for the excellent job they do, especially considering the intolerable circumstances. We have 2 excellent challengers for the 2C03 & 2C04 seats, Jessica Lanza & Theresa Sule, who are ready to serve this community and replace the inactive puppets of Leroy Thorpe.
So if you have time & energy to spare and would like to help out with flyering, volunteering on election day outside of the polls, or just putting a sign up in your window or yard - anything to help bring change this year! ..please speak up or email me at niello8(at)yahoo.com. All neighbors who live in the Whitman, the west side of Penn Quarter, Mount Vernon Square, and Shaw, please vote on election day!
ANC 2C01 Alex Padro
ANC 2C02 Kevin Chapple
ANC 2C03 Jessica Lanza
ANC 2C04 Theresa Sule
P.S. if you arent sure which ANC single member district you reside in, here is a handy map
P.P.S. Whoever is tearing down Kevin Chapple’s brand new signs, stop it. That really sucks and is completely disrespectful to democracy. You know, like an unelected guy controlling an elected body despite the clear will of the voters.

Neighbors,
I wanted tonotfiy neighbors that an Emergency Preparedness Event will be held in the neighborhood hosted by DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
The event will be held Thursday, November 6 at 5pm at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library, 901 G St. NW, Room 810
Information can be found at www.dccommunitypreparedness.org.
It’s like stepping into wonderland … everyone is smiling, eager to help you, free tasty samples. They have everything, seafood, cheese, huge wine selection, fresh breads, deli, desserts, hand cranked ice cream (joking). It’s a great feeling of relief to have them finally open in our neighborhood.
Posted in Shops, Contractors, Opinion, News, Events, DevelopmentIt sounds like this is the group to field ideas for the name of the ‘park’ over 395 at H and 2nd….
Something inspiring like a human rights/civil rights activist, although all the places abroad that I have visited name a lot of their squares and buildings after poets and artists rather than statesmen and military heroes.

Ok all its WTF time and let me start off by stating that I am NOT harping on the police because our officers are doing an amazing job.
Remember the last eruption of gunfire? Officers were at 5th & N and heard the shots coming from the 400 block of N and they responded immediately. The police chased 2 suspects to 4th & M between two parked cars where they were detained. They recovered weapons that had been discarded in the immediate vicinity. One male victim was grazed by a bullet. We coudn’t ask for better police work.
Well, turns out the 2 (juvenile) suspects have been released without arrest. The police assert that there is not enough evidence for an arrest. How is this possible? Well I’m not really sure and I haven’t gotten a very good explanation from any of the MPD brass. Is there really some sort of impossible standard that our officers have to meet to even arrest people? Do they really have to fully investigate, get lab results, essentially prove a case worthy of a court victory before even arresting a suspect? What ever happened to probable cause which seems to be abundant in this situation? I’m no lawyer but this is truly baffling and unacceptable.
Harry Jaffe recently lamented our soft gun laws and IMO he is right. These guys know that if they get caught NOTHING happens. No wonder we hear that pop pop pop! so often. There are no consequences to their actions. This week there is a vigil & funeral for a shooting victim, Chris Taylor, a sober reminder of the ultimate terrible eventuality. We can have all of the meetings, forums, programs etc. in the world but if there are no penalties this is not going to stop.
So who do we turn to? The courts, the lawyers, and the lawmakers. While you all are bickering about gun rights, perhaps you might think about penalties for abuse. I am speaking primarily to our elected leaders and Acting AG Peter Nickles
One more thing. Remember Jack Evans July 16th press release announcing Shotspotter up & running in Shaw? “Criminals Beware” & all…Well, it turns out Shotspotter isnt operational yet. At this point I dont even know what to say.
Adults, Teens & Children: Loitering & Shouting ’til 3AM
Jul 29th, 2008 by Life in Mount Vernon Square
I’ve just sent an e-mail to our DC Councilman’s (Tommy Wells) office.
I am requesting assistance from your office with the noise level and late night loitering in the parking lot of Museum Square at 401 K St. NW, Washington, DC 20001.
People congregate on the benches under the shelters in the parking lot in the rear of the building every night until about 3AM. The crowd can range in size from 5-15 and often include children (there was a toddler around 3 or 4 years old, crying from 2-3 AM and wandering the parking lot last night - while an adult just stood there with the child’s stroller under the shelter talking with their friends, ignoring the child). There are also a number of teenagers that loiter in the same location, shouting and running around the parking lot.
It’s very disrespectful to those that are trying to sleep & it’s most definitely disturbing the peace.
As there are recent reports for muggings in this neighborhood, recent vandalism to the building in which I reside (someone shot BBs into the windows of 3 of retail spaces last Saturday night), prostitution & harassment reports of residents by groups of individuals - I would like to request an increase in police presence and more frequent patrols of the area spanning between 4th to 6th and NY Ave to Mass Ave. With a lot of new residents moving into the neighborhood, it would be great if the MPD could help us feel a bit more secure.
