I was pleased to learn this week that the DC Latino Political Action Committee has endorsed my candidacy for Ward 2 Councilmember.

The DC Latino PAC stands for equal political representation, justice in housing, access to healthcare, free and appropriate education, equal employment opportunities, and safe communities.

It is a privilege to have the organization’s support and to be the only non-incumbent candidate that received this honor.

You can read their press released here.

Saturday I got a txt from TC Scott saying our Mayor Fenty was at the Big Bear. I had to wander over to see this. Anyway I race on over to the Bear. And lo, there he was out on the patio of the Bear, in the sun, being all bald and mayorly.

Just a reminder that this weekend through next weekend, from August 2 to August 10, is tax-free shopping in the District. The exemption on the usual 5.75% sales tax applies to school supplies, clothing, shoes, and accessory items costing $100 or less.

The sales tax exemption applies to each eligible item regardless of how many items are sold on the same bill to a customer. It will also apply to layaway sales if the retailer and customer enter into a layaway agreement or the customer makes the final payment on the layaway order during the exemption period.

It’s a good opportunity to support our local businesses.

For more information about the Sales Tax holiday, click here or call (202) 727-4TAX (4829).

This would be a better referenced post if I knew where the heck my Census table was, but alas, I don’t have it. But when I find it, I’ll correct the data and cite it and all that good academic stuff.
One day I had a question, a question that fun Census data could answer. Who’s actually from here? There are DC natives, they proudly mention that they are from here. But so many people I meet around

Alice Swanson

Occasionally, I read something in the newspaper that hits a little too close to home. This morning, I learned of the death of Alice Swanson, a 22-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a garbage truck while riding her bike to work just north of Dupont Circle at 20th and R Streets. (Examiner, Washington Post, WTOP, DCist). She was a cautious and safe bicyclist, warning others to wear their helmets. I did not know Alice, but I’d be very surprised if our paths have not crossed or if we didn’t have mutual friends. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

Most days, I bike to work and to get around town, and I frequently ride through the area where Alice was hit. It’s sad and disturbing when something like this happens. When I mentioned the article to a friend who lives a few blocks away from the accident, his reaction was “those garbage truck drivers are crazy. They go 40 miles per hour down my block.” I don’t know if that is what occurred here, but I hope there is a full investigation of what occurred, that the police are closely enforcing our traffic laws, and that the city raises awareness of bike safety for both drivers and bicyclists.

Everyone, please be careful and safe.

Sittin around the house

My family was never really big on holidays. Mostly we’d treat it like an extra weekend day, which is what I’m doing today. My big plan is to once again attempt to clean the first floor and make sure no one sets anything off in my front yard.
I love my little bit of 600-800 sq. feet of American dirt so much that I will fiercely protect it with a water hose. Though it looks like it won’t be much of

Risking a jinx- fireworks

At the risk of jinxing it, have you noticed a decrease in pre-4th of July firework noise? I swear this time a few years back there was the old neighborhood question of “fireworks or gunfire?” Over time I’ve noticed a decrease in firework activity that used to start up around mid June and continue into early August. It’s late June and I’ve only heard one incident of fireworks going off.
The 4th

Tonight, I joined New Endeavors by Women for their 20th anniversary of providing transitional housing, counseling, and employment identification assistance for homeless women. The program, located in the Shaw neighborhood, includes space for 26 individuals. It provides services for up to 2 years, though most of its women find jobs and move into permanent housing within 18 months. I had an opportunity to speak with successful alumni of the program including Alicia, who recently bought her own home.

You can learn more about NEW on this fact sheet and backgrounder.
