I really have little to add to what Shaw & Bloomingdale bloggers have to say about the various things going on, so I’m going to go to history and type up more of City Planner John Nolen’s report “Low Cost Housing and Slum Clearance Opportunities in Washington Under the Public Works Administration”. I previously typed up the section “Washington’s Problem”. The following is “Objectives of a Housing

HP approved the razing of 1209 4th Street NW.  Sad news for this long neglected 150 yr old junker but shes beyond saving.  Demolition by neglect at its finest… I just glad there is a new owner.

Jeff & I spent a splendid happy hour at Corduroy with Rob A., its a lovely spot & their hh specials wont break the bank.  $6 wines by the glass, $4 spring rolls & $6 cheese assortment and their new location at 1122 9th street is really stunning.  If you go, remember to change out of those shorts n sandals :)
After we parted, we noticed that there was a concert going on at the Carnegie Library at Mount Vernon Square.  Upon hearing the sweet sounds of old-timey music, jeff promptly detoured & parked the ol red crotch rocket on the walkway.  We marinated for a spell & listened to this:
The “Sunshine Skiffle Band” Skiffle is a type of folk music with jazz, blues, and country influences, usually using homemade or improvised instruments such as the washboard, tea chest bass, kazoo, cigar-box fiddle, musical saw, as well as more conventional instruments such as the acoustic guitar and banjo.
It was goooood.  I mean one guy was playing a JUG! how could you not love it?  And here is how people danced to it…

This couple got their groove on so delightfully it was infectious.  A lot of knee slappin, butt slappin…:)

The DC Historic Society is putting these free concerts on pretty much every wednesday and the offerings are very diverse.  The next one will feature Lox & Vodka (Jewish Soul Music).  And you can buy beer and wine in the roped off area which has some nice tables & chairs.  Check the calendar for a list of concerts….and its FREE!

I have something. It is long and if you have time I’d like you to read it and give your thoughts. I’m leaving off the date and the source so I can ask you the following questions:
When do you think this was written? What year, what decade? Language will give a clue.
After reading the following passage, how do you see DC’s housing problem?

According to a recent WaPo article, the city is exploring the idea of closing the northern section of 395 to eliminate access to/from NY Ave & 3rd Street.  This stunted highway has been the subject of debate since way back in the day when they wanted to level Shaw to take it all the way up to MD.  I’m really glad they didnt do that.  (check out an excellent exhibit at the National Building Museum for the skinny on that & Urban Renewal…hey! you can walk there!)  And more recently when the tunnel under NY Ave idea was percolating.  What do you all think the closure of that top stretch of 395 would do for traffic, etc?  Certainly the intersection of 3rd & NY and its environs is …er…a challenge for pedestrians.  With many new people moving into the Triangle, & businesses opening up shop drawing walkers from all over, maybe this could be a good thing.  With Northwest One development under way, it could be linked to the Triangle with smarth growth practices.  But then take into account where the cars are going to go…Mass Ave probably.  Is that better?  And how would this fit into the other 10 plans they have for the area?  Consider what we have now & sound off:

Speaking of pedestrians, Charles Allen from Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells Office (who blogs:) sent notice of a public meeting for the pedestrian master plan.  you can view the actual plan here.

Of course, we all recognize that if we are ultimately to improve psychological and physical conditions for minorities there must be total elimination of ghettoes and the establishment of a truly integrated society. In the meantime, however, all those working for economic and social justice are forced to address themselves to interim programs which, while not totally changing the situation, will

Remembering 1968

Rob

I thought I would post a short note commemorating two anniversaries, one significant to the nation and the other the city of Washington. Forty years ago today Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. That event sparked civic disturbances in over 100 cities including Washington, D.C.
This map, published in the book Ten […]

Further rumblings in Marc Fisher’s column that Douglas Development intends to move the Waffle Shop to the 600 block of NY now that it has been declared historic & must be preserved.  I’m all for it!
DD still tells us they are in the planning/acquisition stages of megadevelopment.  Despite the article’s ending pessimism, they seem to be moving forward, albeit glacially.  I really look forward to the day when all that vacant property gets filled.
