Dear ANC 2C04 Residents:
I would like to represent you as your Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for Single Member District 2C04 in Shaw, and would appreciate your vote on November 4, 2008.
ANC2C has been plagued with many problems. The lack of leadership, the indifference of some of it’s representatives, and it’s dysfunction while critical decisions have been made concerning this community has to end. ANC2C needs to do a better job of advising city government of the needs of it’s residents. ANC2C has failed to abide by the laws that govern it. Instead of placing blame. I have chosen to step forth to “be the change that I want to see” in ANC2C.
I believe that this community has a bright, diverse future. I believe that ANC2C could be a viable well functioning ANC. I believe that it is our responsibility to bring about change to make sure that our
ANC2C does that job that it has been charted to do.
There has been a lot of talk about “CHANGE” in the various political campaigns in 2008. It is definitely time to make sure that change comes to this ANC.
To give you a little of my background, I am a graduate of the George Washington University School of Business, the George Washington University Center for Excellence in Public Leadership DC Neighborhood
College, and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
As the President of the 1330 Tenant Association, the treasurer of the Convention Center Community Association, a tenant advocate, and volunteer on the Local School Restructuring Team for Shaw Junior
High School, I have shown a commitment to giving back to my community. I have also volunteered my time in countless community projects as well as at the United Planning Organization, The Office of Tenant
Advocates and Seaton Elementary School.
As a parent of students at KIPP Will Academy, Cleveland Elementary and the Washington Yu-Ying Charter Public School, I appreciate that a rock solid education is essential for raising my children, building strong individuals, and having great communities.
Some of my accomplishments include:
Preserving affordable housing at 1330 Apartments. The tenant association was able to purchase the building in a partnership with a nonprofit developer, preserve affordability and renovate the building without displacing any residents.
I have worked with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District as well as the Attorney General to address criminal issues in and surrounding 1330 Apartments. Under this initiative we were able to increase security at 1330. We upgraded our security system so that our elevators only have key card access.
We also installed a security door on the 1st floor to secure our lobby. We have made sure that our security team has a good relationship with MPD. We have made sure that we get evictions for illegal activity in units. We have greatly reduced the loitering in and around 1330. We have made many strides in making
the building secure from loiters and illegal activity.
I make sure that our residents receive needed services and donations. I have the Department of Environment come to sign our senior and disabled residents up for energy assistance. I have the Salvation Army sign Seniors up for Christmas Vouchers, I make sure residents know about neighborhood events. I also have collected and distributed Christmas gifts and school supplies to needy residents.
I have supported the City Market at O development as well as Parcel 42.
I have worked to reform our tenant association so that it is following organizational rules such as creating and distributing meeting minutes, making sure the organization is transparent, and creating rules and policies to strengthen the tenant association as well as the 1330 community as a whole.
What I plan to do when elected:
Make sure that I have a pulse in the community and understand the needs of my constituents so that I can advocate on their behalf.
Make sure that the library as well as Shaw Middle School remain on the forefront for development in the community.
Make sure that I represent the needs of my constituents to city officials, developers, and any other party who addresses our ANC.
Help to bring functionality back to ANC2C which includes:
Making sure that notice of ANC Meetings are distributed in accordance with regulation.
Make sure that meeting minutes as well as other documents are available to the public.
How you can help:
Let me know your concerns. I have not gotten an opportunity to do much “door to door” knocking but will definitely do more if/when I am elected to see what your concerns are.
Volunteer to help work the polls on November 4th. Please let me know if and when you are available.
Please vote on November 4th and encourage your neighbors to do so as well. In case the line is long take your mp3 player, a book, or some other distraction. Be the buddy for the person in front and
back of you. Do what ever you have to make sure you vote and don’t leave your designated polling site without voting.
Last but not least, I charge you to “be the change that you want to see”. Get involved in your community. Come to the meetings, make your voice heard, and make sure that your elected leaders represent
you as they have been elected to do.
Please vote for Change! Vote Theresa Sule to represent ANC2C04.
Thank you.
